The five causes of warm AC

When a Mercedes AC system blows warm air instead of cold, there are five possible causes, in approximate order of frequency: low refrigerant due to a leak, a failed compressor, a blocked or failed expansion valve, a damaged condenser, or an electrical fault preventing the compressor from engaging. Diagnosing which one is the problem before spending money on repairs is critical — replacing a compressor when the real fault is a simple leaking O-ring wastes £400–£800.

2. Low refrigerant: the most common cause

The AC system is sealed but loses approximately 8–10% of its refrigerant annually through microscopic permeation of the rubber hoses and seals. After 3–5 years, the system may be 30–50% low, which is enough to noticeably reduce cooling. A pressure test on an AC machine reveals whether the system has refrigerant or has lost it completely. If the system is low but not empty, a regas (£70–£110 for R134a, £140–£200 for R1234yf) may restore cooling. However, a regas without a leak test is wasted money if there is a significant leak. The AC machine draws a vacuum and holds it for 10 minutes; if the vacuum decays, there is a leak and it must be found before regassing. Common leak points on Mercedes include the condenser (stone damage at the front), the compressor shaft seal, and the O-rings at hose connections. UV dye added during regas helps locate future leaks.

3. Compressor failure

The AC compressor is a pump driven by the engine via a belt. When it fails — either the clutch does not engage, the internal pistons are worn, or it has seized — no refrigerant circulates and no cooling occurs. A failed compressor often produces a grinding or squealing noise when the AC is engaged. Diagnosis: check whether the compressor clutch engages when AC is switched on. If it does not, the fault may be electrical (pressure switch, relay, or control module) rather than mechanical. If the clutch engages but the compressor is noisy or the high-side pressure does not rise, the compressor is internally worn. A new compressor costs £400–£800 plus fitting and system flush (the system must be flushed to remove debris from the failed compressor before the new one is installed). If the system is not flushed, the new compressor will fail within months.

4. Expansion valve and condenser faults

The expansion valve regulates refrigerant flow into the evaporator. When it fails — stuck open or closed — one side of the car may blow cold while the other blows warm (a classic Mercedes symptom on W204 and W212 models). The valve itself costs £40–£80, but accessing it may require dashboard disassembly, pushing the labour cost to £300–£500. The condenser (the radiator-like component at the front of the car) can be damaged by stone impacts or corrode at the bottom from road salt. A damaged condenser leaks refrigerant slowly. Replacement costs £250–£500 and requires a system regas afterwards. If the condenser is being replaced, the receiver-drier should be replaced at the same time (it absorbs moisture from the system and becomes saturated once exposed to atmosphere).

5. Electrical faults and the cheaper checks first

Before condemning the compressor or condenser, check the simple things: the AC pressure switch (a £30–£60 sensor that prevents compressor engagement if refrigerant pressure is too low or too high — if it fails, the compressor will not engage even with correct refrigerant pressure); the compressor relay (a £20–£40 relay in the fuse box — swap it with an identical one to test); and the cabin/pollen filter (a clogged filter restricts airflow and makes the AC seem weak even when working correctly — a new filter costs £15–£35 and takes 5 minutes). We always check these three items first because they are cheap and common. If you are quoted a compressor replacement, ask whether these simpler checks have been done. A good garage will have checked them before quoting major work.

The AC pressure switch: a £30 part that stops a £500 repair

The AC pressure switch — also called the trinary or binary switch — is a sensor that monitors refrigerant pressure and prevents compressor engagement if the pressure is too low (protecting the compressor from running without lubrication) or too high (protecting the system from over-pressure). When this switch fails, it sends an incorrect signal to the engine ECU, which prevents the compressor clutch from engaging — even though the refrigerant pressure is perfectly normal. The result is warm air from the vents, and the fault is frequently misdiagnosed as a failed compressor. A new pressure switch costs £30–£60 and takes 15 minutes to replace (it screws into the high-pressure line). We always check the pressure switch before quoting compressor replacement. On approximately 15% of "AC not cold" diagnoses we see from other garages, the compressor has been condemned when the actual fault is the pressure switch.

The pollen filter: the forgotten component

A clogged pollen (cabin) filter restricts airflow through the evaporator, reducing the AC system's ability to transfer heat from the cabin air to the refrigerant. Even if the AC system is functioning perfectly, a blocked filter will make it seem weak — the air volume is reduced, and the cabin takes longer to cool. A genuine Mercedes pollen filter costs £15–£35 and takes 5–10 minutes to replace (on most models it is located behind the glovebox or under the dashboard). Many owners are surprised by how much difference a new filter makes. We recommend replacing the pollen filter annually — it is one of the cheapest maintenance items on the car and improves both cooling performance and cabin air quality. If your AC seems weak, check the filter before spending money on diagnostics.
