Mercedes MOT Failures: The 10 Most Common Reasons Mercedes Fail & How to Prevent Every One
Every year, thousands of Mercedes fail the MOT on predictable, preventable items. Here are the 10 most common reasons, which models are worst affected, and a simple pre-MOT checklist that will save you a retest fee and a wasted day.
1. Suspension arms, bushes and ball joints
This is the single most common MOT failure category for Mercedes across all models. The multi-link front and rear suspension setups used on virtually every modern Mercedes have multiple control arms, each with rubber bushes and in some cases ball joints. These components wear with age and mileage — the rubber bushes crack and delaminate, causing excessive play that the MOT tester can feel with a pry bar. The most commonly failed items are: front lower control arm rear bushes (W204, W205, W212), front upper control arm ball joints (W205, W213), rear toe-control arm bushes (all multi-link rear Mercedes), and anti-roll bar drop links (all models). If you hear a clunk over speed bumps or rough surfaces, get it checked before the MOT. Replacing a control arm before the MOT costs £120–£280 per arm including parts, labour, and subsequent wheel alignment. Failing the MOT on a suspension item means the retest fee, the same repair cost, and the inconvenience of a second visit.
2. Brake imbalance and brake efficiency
The MOT brake test measures the braking force at each wheel and compares left to right. An imbalance of more than 30% is a fail. Mercedes brake imbalance is usually caused by one of three things: a sticking brake caliper (common on cars that do low mileage and sit for extended periods), uneven pad and disc wear from a previously sticking caliper that was not fully resolved, or the SBC electronic brake system on W211 and W220 models throwing a fault code that triggers a warning light (which is an automatic MOT fail). If your car pulls to one side under braking, or if you feel a pulsing through the brake pedal, the caliper is likely the culprit. A caliper replacement costs £180–£350 depending on model. Brake fluid condition also matters — old fluid with high water content reduces braking efficiency, which can show up as a marginal pass on the brake test.
3. Diesel emissions: smoke opacity
This one has become much more common since the DVSA introduced stricter diesel emissions testing in 2018. The MOT smoke test measures particulate matter in the exhaust — essentially, how much soot the engine is producing. A healthy diesel Mercedes with a functioning DPF should produce virtually no visible smoke. Cars that fail the smoke test typically have one of these problems: a DPF that has been removed or internally gutted, a DPF that is cracked or damaged, a faulty injector over-fuelling one cylinder, a turbo leaking oil into the intake, or the car was tested cold (a hot engine produces less smoke). Before your MOT, take the car for a 20-minute motorway drive at sustained speed to get the DPF hot and ensure it completes a regeneration cycle. If your car has been driven only on short urban journeys for weeks, the DPF will be partially loaded and may produce enough smoke to fail.
4. Headlamp aim and condition
Headlamp aim is an easy MOT fail and an easy fix. The tester measures the beam pattern and aim; if the beam is too high, too low, or the pattern is distorted, it fails. Common causes on Mercedes include: self-levelling sensor failure on xenon/LED headlamps (the sensor is mounted on the suspension and can be broken by a pothole impact), cloudy or yellowed headlamp lenses (which diffuses the beam pattern), and incorrect bulb fitting (a bulb not fully seated in its holder will produce a distorted beam). Clean your headlamps before the MOT. If the lenses are cloudy, a polishing kit costs £15 and takes 30 minutes — far cheaper than replacement lenses at £200–£600 each.
5. Tyre condition
The minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. Many Mercedes owners do not realise their tyres are marginal until the MOT tester measures them. Run-flat tyres fitted to many newer Mercedes are particularly expensive to replace — a set of four can easily run to £800–£1,000. If your tyres are close to the limit, the inner edges — which wear faster on Mercedes due to the negative camber settings — are often below the legal limit even when the outer edge looks fine. Check the inner edges before the MOT, not just the outer edges. A tyre below 2mm is an advisory; below 1.6mm is a fail. Replace tyres in pairs on the same axle. Also check for cuts, bulges, and sidewall damage — any of these is an automatic fail.
6–10: The remaining common failures
6. Windscreen damage: a chip larger than 10mm in the driver's line of sight (the swept area directly in front of the driver) or larger than 40mm elsewhere in the swept area is a fail. Small chips can be repaired for £30–£50 before the MOT. 7. Registration plate lamps: both number plate lights must work. The bulbs cost £2 each and take 5 minutes to replace. Check them the night before. 8. Washer fluid: if the washers do not spray enough fluid to clear the screen, it is a fail. Top up before the test. 9. Seat belt condition: fraying, cuts, or a buckle that does not latch securely are all fails. Check all belts — including the rear seats, which are often ignored. 10. Exhaust leaks: a blowing exhaust, particularly from a cracked flexi-joint on the downpipe (common on OM651 engines), will fail the emissions test and is a mechanical fail in its own right.
