Mercedes Gearbox Fluid Guide: 236.14 vs 236.15 vs 236.17 — Which ATF Your Gearbox Actually Needs
Put the wrong automatic transmission fluid into a Mercedes gearbox and it will destroy itself within months — not immediately, but slowly and expensively. Here is how to make sure the right ATF goes into your Mercedes, every time.
Why automatic transmission fluid is not interchangeable
Automatic transmission fluid is arguably the most precisely specified fluid in your Mercedes — more so than engine oil. ATF operates under extreme shear forces, high temperatures, and must maintain a very specific friction coefficient so that the clutch packs engage smoothly without slipping or grabbing. The wrong ATF will cause one of two problems, sometimes both. If the friction coefficient is too low, the clutch packs will slip under load, generating heat and wearing the friction material prematurely. If it is too high, shifts become harsh and jerky, which shocks the drivetrain and can damage mounts, driveshaft couplings, and the gearbox internals. Mercedes specifies three distinct ATF specifications for its modern automatic gearboxes, and they are not interchangeable. Using MB 236.14 in a gearbox that requires MB 236.17 will cause shift quality problems within 500–1,000 miles. Using generic Dexron or multi-vehicle ATF in any Mercedes gearbox is Russian roulette — you might get away with it for a while, or you might be looking at a £3,000 rebuild. Do not risk it.
MB 236.14 — 7G-Tronic (722.9) up to approximately 2015
MB 236.14 is the specification for the 7G-Tronic gearbox in its earlier years, from its introduction in 2003 through approximately 2015. This ATF is a full-synthetic fluid with a specific friction-modifier package designed for the wet-clutch setup in the 722.9, which uses clutch-to-clutch shifting rather than the older freewheel-based mechanisms. The fluid also serves as hydraulic oil for the valve body, which operates at precise pressures to control shift quality. If your Mercedes was built before 2015 and has the 7G-Tronic gearbox, this is almost certainly the specification you need — but verify by VIN on Xentry. Common approved products for 236.14 include Fuchs Titan ATF 4134, Febi Bilstein 29934, and genuine Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic ATF. Expect to pay £12–£18 per litre. A full service requires approximately 9 litres (though only 5–6 drain during a standard service, the rest is in the torque converter).
MB 236.15 — 7G-Tronic from approximately 2015 onwards
MB 236.15 is a revised specification for the later-production 7G-Tronic gearboxes. The changes are primarily in the friction-modifier package and the fluid's behaviour at very low temperatures. Mercedes introduced this specification partly to address reports of cold-weather shift harshness on some 7G-Tronic applications. It is backward compatible in the sense that a 2015+ gearbox should use 236.15 rather than 236.14, but putting 236.15 into an earlier gearbox is generally not recommended unless specifically advised by a Mercedes specialist who has checked the TCU software version. The cost difference between 236.14 and 236.15 is negligible — £1–£2 per litre. Common approved products include Fuchs Titan ATF 4134 (which meets both 236.14 and 236.15 in later formulations), Shell Spirax S5 ATF, and genuine Mercedes-Benz fluid. When in doubt between 236.14 and 236.15 for a 2014–2016 car, check the VIN. The gearbox serial number prefix will tell an experienced Mercedes technician exactly which fluid is correct.
MB 236.17 — 9G-Tronic (725.0)
MB 236.17 is the specification for the 9G-Tronic gearbox, introduced in 2013 on the E-Class and now fitted to virtually every longitudinal-engine Mercedes from the C-Class upward. This ATF is an ultra-low-viscosity fluid designed for the 9G's much tighter hydraulic tolerances and the additional clutch packs that enable nine forward ratios in essentially the same physical package as the 7G. Using 236.14 or 236.15 in a 9G-Tronic gearbox is a serious mistake. The thicker fluid will cause delayed shifts, the TCU will detect abnormal shift times and may trigger limp mode, and long-term use will damage the valve body. The 9G-Tronic is genuinely intolerant of incorrect fluid — more so than the 7G. Common approved products for 236.17 include genuine Mercedes-Benz 9G-Tronic ATF (blue in colour, which helps technicians visually confirm the correct fluid is being used), Fuchs Titan ATF 9G, and Ravenol ATF 9G. Expect to pay £18–£28 per litre. A full service requires approximately 10 litres, with 6–7 litres drainable during a standard service. The 9G filter is integrated into the sump assembly, so the sump itself is replaced in some cases rather than just the filter element.
How to verify the correct ATF was used after a gearbox service
Every gearbox service invoice should list the exact ATF specification used, not just "automatic transmission fluid" or "ATF." A reputable Mercedes specialist will print the MB-Approval number on the invoice — e.g. "Fuchs Titan ATF 4134 (MB 236.14)" — along with the quantity used. This is your proof that the correct fluid went into your gearbox. If the invoice is vague, ask. If the garage cannot tell you which specification they used, find a different garage next time. You can also ask to see the empty bottles — good workshops keep them until the customer collects the car precisely so there is no ambiguity. For the 9G-Tronic, the blue colour of genuine Mercedes ATF is a useful visual check: if the technician shows you the drained fluid and fresh fluid side by side, the fresh 236.17 fluid should be noticeably blue. If it is the same amber colour as the old fluid, the wrong ATF may have been used. This is a simple but effective way to protect yourself from a costly mistake.
