Getting your Mercedes AC regassed without a leak test first is like filling a punctured tyre without fixing the puncture. Here is what a proper Mercedes AC service involves, why R1234yf costs more, and how to diagnose AC problems before you pay for a regas that will last two weeks.
R134a vs R1234yf: why your Mercedes might use either
The refrigerant used in your Mercedes air conditioning system depends on the build date. Cars built before 2017 almost universally use R134a, a hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant that has been the automotive standard since the 1990s. Cars built from 2017 onwards use R1234yf, a hydrofluoroolefin refrigerant mandated by EU legislation because it has a global warming potential approximately 350 times lower than R134a. Both refrigerants work on the same physical principle — compression, condensation, expansion, and evaporation — but their thermodynamic properties are different enough that the systems are not interchangeable. You cannot put R134a into an R1234yf system or vice versa. The service ports are different sizes and shapes to prevent accidental mixing. How to tell which your car uses: open the bonnet and look for a sticker on the slam panel or radiator support. It will state the refrigerant type and capacity. If there is no sticker, a Mercedes specialist can identify the system from your VIN.
Why R1234yf costs more: it is not just the refrigerant
An R1234yf regas costs £140–£200 compared to £70–£110 for R134a. The refrigerant itself is more expensive — approximately £60–£80 per kilogram versus £10–£15 for R134a — but the cost difference also reflects the more sophisticated equipment required. R1234yf is mildly flammable (classified as A2L), so the recovery and charging machines must be intrinsically safe and are more expensive to purchase and maintain. The AC service procedure is otherwise identical: the machine recovers any remaining refrigerant, draws a vacuum on the system to boil off moisture and check for major leaks, holds the vacuum for a specified period to confirm system integrity, then recharges with the correct weight of refrigerant and the correct quantity of PAG compressor oil. If the system fails the vacuum hold test, it has a leak — and recharging it without fixing the leak is a waste of your money. The refrigerant will escape within days or weeks and you will be back at square one. A proper Mercedes AC specialist will tell you the vacuum test result before proceeding with the regas. If the system fails the vacuum test, they should offer a leak-detection service using UV dye or nitrogen pressure testing to locate the leak.
Common reasons Mercedes AC stops working
Low refrigerant is the most common cause of warm air from the vents, but it is not the only one. A failed compressor (£400–£800 replacement) will not pump refrigerant regardless of how much is in the system. A blocked expansion valve can cause one side of the car to blow cold while the other blows warm — this is a common complaint on W204 C-Class and W212 E-Class models. A failed condenser (the radiator-like component at the front of the car) is common on cars that have suffered a stone impact — a small hole allows refrigerant to escape slowly over weeks. The condenser is also susceptible to corrosion at the bottom where road salt and moisture collect. Musty smells from the vents are caused by bacterial growth on the evaporator, not a refrigerant problem — this requires an antibacterial treatment or evaporator cleaning rather than a regas. If your AC works at first but then stops cooling after 20–30 minutes, the problem may be the compressor clutch failing to maintain engagement when hot, or an over-pressure condition caused by a blocked condenser or a faulty cooling fan.
The right way to service Mercedes AC
A proper Mercedes AC service should follow this sequence: first, check system operation — is the compressor engaging, are the cooling fans running, what are the vent temperatures? Connect the AC machine and recover any remaining refrigerant, noting the quantity recovered (if significantly less than specification, there is definitely a leak). Draw a vacuum and hold for at least 10 minutes. If the vacuum holds, the system is leak-tight enough to proceed. Recharge with the correct weight and type of refrigerant. Add UV dye to help locate any future leaks. Run the system and measure vent temperatures — a healthy Mercedes AC should blow 4–8°C at the centre vents on maximum cold with the engine at 1,500 RPM. Replace the cabin/pollen filter if it has not been done recently. The entire service takes about an hour. If the vacuum test fails, additional diagnostic time is needed — typically 30–60 minutes for leak detection. The pollen filter is often overlooked: a clogged filter reduces airflow and can make the AC seem less effective even when it is working correctly. How often should you regas your Mercedes AC
AC systems naturally lose approximately 8–10% of their refrigerant per year through microscopic permeation of the rubber hoses and seals. This is normal. After 3–4 years, the system may be 30–40% low, which is enough to noticeably reduce cooling performance. We recommend having the AC system checked every 2–3 years, even if it seems to be working. A preventative regas is cheaper than letting the system run low, because low refrigerant reduces the amount of compressor oil circulating through the system, which can lead to compressor failure.
