Mercedes GLE & ML Transfer Case Motor Failure: Symptoms, Diagnosis & Repair

The 4MATIC transfer case on the GLE and ML can develop motor and chain faults that affect all-wheel-drive operation. Here is how to spot the symptoms before the repair bill escalates.

Mercedes GLE & ML Transfer Case Motor Failure: Symptoms, Diagnosis & Repair

Transfer case basics

The transfer case on 4MATIC GLE and ML models distributes power between the front and rear axles. It contains an electric actuator motor that engages and modulates the clutch pack. The motor and its associated chain drive are the most common failure points, particularly when the transfer case fluid has not been changed at the recommended 40,000-mile interval.

2. Symptoms of transfer case problems

Common symptoms include: a jerking or binding sensation during low-speed tight turns (particularly parking manoeuvres), a "4MATIC malfunction" warning on the dashboard, and uneven tyre wear (because the binding transfer case effectively fights the steering). The symptoms are often intermittent at first and worsen over weeks. A transfer case that is binding can also put additional strain on the front differential and driveshafts.

3. Repair and prevention

Transfer case actuator motor replacement costs £500–£900. If the chain has stretched or the clutch pack is worn, the entire transfer case may need replacement or rebuild: £1,500–£2,500. Prevention: change the transfer case fluid every 40,000 miles using the correct MB-spec fluid (typically MB 235.74 or equivalent). This is an often-overlooked service item — many garages do not mention it because Mercedes does not list it in the standard service schedule. A fluid change costs £80–£120 and is the cheapest protection against a transfer case failure.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does my Mercedes gearbox really need an oil service?

Yes. Despite "fill for life" marketing, every 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic box we see benefits from a fluid and filter service at 40,000 miles. It is the single best thing you can do for long-term gearbox health.
