The W212: brilliant engineering, predictable age faults
The W212 E-Class (2009–2016) is one of the best-engineered modern Mercedes, capable of reaching 200,000 miles with proper maintenance. However, age-related faults now appear predictably across the fleet. None make the car unreliable — they are simply items that wear with time.
1. Airmatic rear strut failure
The single most expensive routine fault. Rear air struts fail at 80,000–120,000 miles as the rubber bladder develops micro-cracks. The car sinks overnight and the compressor overworks. A single rear strut: £550–£800 fitted. If the compressor has been overworking: add £400–£600. Many owners replace both rear struts together. 2. OM651 timing chain (diesel)
