Is the W204 C-Class reliable? The honest answer
The W204 C-Class, built from 2007 to 2014, is genuinely one of the more reliable modern Mercedes. It scores well in reliability surveys and many examples have passed 150,000 miles without major issues. That said, there are eight well-known faults that appear with enough regularity that every owner should be aware of them. Most are age-related rather than mileage-related — a 2009 car with 60,000 miles may experience them sooner than a 2013 car with 100,000 miles, because time affects rubber components, electronic modules, and corrosion just as much as mileage does. The good news: none of these faults are particularly complex to fix for a Mercedes specialist, and most are predictable enough that you can budget for them.
1. ESL (Electronic Steering Lock) failure
This is arguably the most notorious W204 fault. The Electronic Steering Lock is an anti-theft device that locks the steering column when the key is removed. When it fails — and it does, typically without warning — the car will not start. The dashboard displays "Steering lock — visit workshop" and the ignition will not turn. The ESL motor mechanism wears out internally, and once it fails, the steering column module needs to be removed and either repaired by an EEPROM specialist or replaced with a new unit that must be coded to the car via Xentry. Cost to repair at a specialist: £350–£500 for an emulator that bypasses the ESL (the most cost-effective permanent solution), or £600–£900 for a genuine replacement ESL coded to the car. This fault is more common on pre-2010 cars and is now well-known enough that many specialists keep emulators in stock. If you are buying a W204, ask whether the ESL has been addressed — it is not a question of if, but when.
2. M271 timing chain stretch (petrol engines)
The M271 Kompressor engine — the 1.8-litre petrol fitted to C180 and C200 models — is known for timing chain stretch at higher mileages, typically above 80,000 miles. The tell-tale sign is a rattling noise on cold start that lasts 2–3 seconds, caused by the chain being loose until oil pressure builds in the tensioner. If ignored, the chain can jump teeth and cause valve-to-piston contact, which is an engine-destroying event. The timing chain kit (chain, tensioner, guides, camshaft adjuster gears) costs £1,200–£1,800 to replace in the car at a specialist. If you hear the rattle, do not delay — the cost of replacing the chain is far less than the cost of an engine rebuild. We recommend having the chain inspected via Xentry (camshaft adaptation values) at every service on M271 engines above 60,000 miles. A stretched chain will show increased adaptation values before it becomes audibly noisy.
3. OM651 injector wear (diesel engines)
The OM651 2.1-litre diesel — fitted to C200 CDI, C220 CDI, and C250 CDI models — uses piezo-electric injectors that operate at very high pressures. Over time, the injectors wear internally, causing rough idle, black smoke under acceleration, and in severe cases, diesel dilution of the engine oil (which reduces lubrication and can cause bearing damage). Worn injectors usually show up on Xentry as "injector quantity deviation" or "smooth running control" values outside specification. A single injector replacement costs £350–£500 including coding to the ECU. If multiple injectors are worn, it is usually best to replace them as a matched set of four, which costs £1,200–£1,800. This is the biggest potential expense on a high-mileage OM651 C-Class, and it is one of the reasons a pre-purchase inspection that includes live injector balance testing is so valuable.
4. Rear subframe corrosion
Mercedes issued a technical service bulletin and extended warranty for rear subframe corrosion on the W204. The rear subframe — the large steel structure that carries the rear suspension and differential — can rust from the inside out, particularly at the mounting points where water and road salt collect. In severe cases, the subframe can crack, which is an immediate safety concern and an MOT failure. Mercedes has been replacing affected subframes under goodwill for cars with full Mercedes service history, but this is handled case by case and is becoming harder to claim as the cars age. If the car is outside the goodwill period or does not have full Mercedes history, replacement at an independent specialist costs £800–£1,200. Check the rear subframe before buying any W204 — look for flaking rust, particularly around the forward mounting points where the subframe attaches to the body.
5. Front spring breakage
The front coil springs on the W204 can snap at the bottom coil, particularly on cars driven regularly over speed humps. The bottom coil sits in a metal cup that retains water and road salt, causing corrosion that eventually weakens the spring until it snaps. A broken spring is an MOT fail and the car will sit noticeably lower on the affected corner. Replacement costs £180–£300 per side and springs should always be replaced in pairs to maintain even ride height and handling. This is a relatively minor fault in cost terms but can be inconvenient if it happens without warning.
6. Seat occupancy sensor failure
The sensor mat in the front passenger seat that detects whether someone is sitting there (and thus whether the airbag should deploy in a collision) can fail on the W204, triggering an SRS warning light on the dashboard. This is an MOT fail because it indicates a fault in the supplementary restraint system. Repair involves replacing the sensor mat, which requires partial seat disassembly. Cost at a specialist: £300–£500. An aftermarket bypass emulator is a cheaper alternative but is technically not compliant with safety regulations and we do not recommend it.
7. Thermostat failure (OM651 diesel)
The thermostat on OM651 diesel engines can stick in the open position, causing the engine to run below its optimal operating temperature. Symptoms include the temperature gauge never reaching the normal midpoint, reduced heater output in cold weather, and slightly increased fuel consumption because the engine management system enriches the mixture when it thinks the engine is cold. A genuine Mercedes thermostat costs £40–£60 and replacement takes about an hour. It is one of the cheapest W204 repairs.
8. Glow plug relay failure (OM651 diesel)
The glow plug relay module — which controls the diesel glow plugs during cold starts — can fail on higher-mileage OM651 engines. Symptoms are hard starting in cold weather (the engine cranks for several seconds before firing) and a check-engine light with glow-plug-related fault codes. The relay module is located on the engine and replacement costs £120–£180. An individual failed glow plug is a separate issue — the relay failure affects all four glow plugs simultaneously and is diagnosed by checking for power at each glow plug during a cold start.
