How Airmatic works
Airmatic replaces conventional coil springs with air springs (rubber bladders filled with pressurised air) at each corner, combined with electronically controlled adaptive dampers. An electric compressor maintains system pressure, and a valve block distributes air to each strut as needed. The system continuously adjusts ride height and damping based on speed, load, and the selected drive mode. It is the single biggest contributor to the S-Class and E-Class ride quality, but it is also the single most expensive system to repair when components fail.
2. Air strut failure: the most common fault
Air struts fail when the rubber bladder develops micro-cracks from age and flexing. The car sinks at the affected corner overnight, and the compressor runs excessively to compensate. Front struts typically fail first (they carry more weight). A single strut costs £550–£950 fitted depending on model and whether genuine or OEM (Arnott) is used. Arnott struts carry a lifetime warranty and cost 30–40% less than genuine. Many owners replace struts in pairs on the same axle.
3. Compressor failure
The compressor is rated for a specific duty cycle. When leaking struts force it to run continuously, it overheats and fails. Always replace leaking struts when replacing the compressor — a new compressor paired with leaking struts will fail quickly.
4. Valve block and relay failure
The valve block distributes air to each corner. Internal leaks cause one corner to drop while others hold. Cost: £300–£600. The compressor relay can also fail, causing the compressor not to run at all (even though the compressor itself is fine). A relay costs £20–£40 and takes minutes to replace — always check this before condemning the compressor.

Some owners convert from Airmatic to conventional coil springs to eliminate future air suspension costs. The ride quality is acceptable but not as plush as a functioning Airmatic system. How to diagnose an Airmatic leak yourself
Before taking your car to a garage, you can narrow down which corner is leaking with a simple test. Park the car on level ground. Measure the ride height at each wheel (from the centre of the wheel to the wheel arch) and write down the measurements. Leave the car overnight without starting it. In the morning, measure again. The corner with the largest height difference is the one that is leaking. A difference of more than 10mm overnight indicates a leak. Front struts typically fail before rear struts because they carry more weight. If you can hear the compressor running continuously — or cycling on and off repeatedly — after the car has reached normal height, the system has a leak that the compressor is struggling to compensate for. This test is simple but effective and can save you a diagnostic fee if the fault is obvious.
The compressor duty cycle: why it matters
The Airmatic compressor is designed for intermittent use — it runs briefly to raise the car to ride height after starting, and occasionally to adjust for load changes. It is not designed for continuous operation. When leaking struts force the compressor to run repeatedly or continuously, the compressor overheats. The piston rings inside the compressor wear, the cylinder bore scores, and the compressor loses efficiency — it takes longer to build pressure. A compressor that sounds strained (laboured, louder than normal, or running for more than 30 seconds continuously) is on its way out. Replacing leaking struts before the compressor fails is the most cost-effective approach — a new strut costs £550–£950; a new strut plus a new compressor costs £950–£1,650. The compressor relay should always be checked before condemning the compressor — a failed relay costs £20 and produces identical symptoms (compressor not running).
