When a new conductor plate is fitted, the old adaptations are no longer valid because the new plate has slightly different electrical characteristics and the new ATF has different friction properties. The reset clears all learned values and puts the gearbox into a learning mode where it re-adapts to the new components over the first 50–100 miles of driving.
